We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball; Original Paintings by Kadir Nelson

Friday, Sep 21, 2012 12:00p to 5:00p
South Bend Museum of Art South Bend, IN

This traveling exhibition features a collection of paintings and sketches from the book of the same name. Nelson spent years researching and creating the paintings to be included in the book, recreating an authentic depiction of life in the Negro Leagues. It tells the story of gifted athletes and determined owners; of hundreds of unsung heroes who overcame segregation, hatred, terrible conditions and low pay to do the one thing they loved more than anything else in the world: play ball.
